Svälja Yoga street-level meeting space

“We begin practicing yoga postures in an effort to relieve suffering and find a way to meet life with less effort and more flexibility. Yoga is a path out of suffering. But what we find after our initial foray or honeymoon period is a matrix of psychological and physical holding patterns that have captured our minds and bodies within tightly conditioned parameters.” — Michael Stone, The Inner Tradition of Yoga

Join us for a “study” or, if you like, a collaborative absorption of the foundational, aphoristic Yoga-Sutra, “which truly is a textbook on yoga as a psychological practice” (Stone). Bring a commentary or translation that speaks to you – or more than one! – and share with the community. We’ll center on the Sutras and welcome other texts as they dovetail thematically. For example, from the Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the I Ching:

Hexagram 58: Tui / The Joyous, Lake

“Knowledge should be a refreshing and vitalizing force. It becomes so only through stimulating intercourse with congenial friends with whom one holds discussion and practices application of the truths of life. In this way learning becomes many-sided and takes on a cheerful lightness, whereas there is always something ponderous and one-sided about the learning of the self-taught.”

Svälja Yoga’s Miriam Hanson and David Caligiuri attend as grateful seekers, not as leaders or lecturers; they merely have the door key – and this is not a metaphor. Please contribute you to the “cheerful lightness.”

We completed a thorough study of the Samadhi Pada in 2022/2023.
