Expanding Awareness Through The Way of the Flower

As the seasons turn, Kado—"the Way of the Flower"—invites us to slow down, observe, and engage with the natural world through hands-on practice. In our time together, Ed Heisler shares his nearly decade of experience to give participants a practical pathway to the simple beauty of Kado-style flower arranging.

We explore how setting flowers creates arrangements that are both beautiful and instructive to our human development. For the desirous and curious, join the optional pre-class meditation to get a taste of the state-of-being that a Zen Kado practitioner brings to their flower practice.

What the Series Includes:

  • Hands-On Workshop: Gain a practical pathway to the simple beauty of Kado-style flower arranging.

  • Personal Growth: Discover how setting flowers can be instructive to human development alongside creating beauty.

  • Meditation and Breath Practice: Explore the unique state-of-being of a Zen practitioner through optional pre-class meditation.

  • Nourishing Atmosphere: Experience a welcoming, reflective space designed to foster creativity, focus, and quiet connection.

Materials & Equipment

Please bring a fresh selection of roughly 10 stems to work with during each class.

Selecting Your Stems

  • What to Include:

    • Fresh Stems & Wildflowers: Wild-cut flowers and seasonal blooms are wonderful options.

    • Tree Twigs & Branches: Small leafy or woody branches add great structure (except pine).

  • What to Avoid:

    • Pine Tree Branches: Avoid pine, as it releases compounds that cause other flowers to quickly die.

    • Thorny Flowers: Leave out roses or other heavily thorny stems.

    • Overly Flashy Flowers: Skip extra-bold blooms like large sunflowers.

Equipment Options:

  • Option A: Purchase Your Own Supplies (Recommended): Allows you to take your completed arrangements home and continue practicing.

    • Kado Scissors(Proper metal Kado scissors are strongly recommended over plastic craft scissors, as tool quality directly impacts technique)

    • Kenzan (Flower Frog)

  • Option B: Borrow Classroom Equipment: Free loaner tools (scissors and Kenzan) are available to borrow during class on a first-come, first-served basis for those not ready to purchase or where cost is a barrier.

Opportunity for ongoing Zen Kado practice will follow this workshop series where there is participant interest.
