From Dark to Light — Winter Solstice Flow

From Dark to Light - Winter Solstice Flow

Wednesday, December 21st, 5-8pm

with Miriam Hanson

We look forward to honoring the shortest and darkest day of the year through practicing 108 flows through Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) A together. This is a trauma-conscious practice so you may join and move through as little or as many Sun Salutations as is supportive to you. If you want to join us at the start, you may choose to end your session when you feel complete, or take rest in a restorative posture, and just connect with your breath and the community, journal to reflect on this year, or chant the Gāyatrī Mantra. This is your time to honor this transition and it doesn’t matter if you physically practice all 108 Sun Salutations.

The Winter Solstice symbolizes death and rebirth – new beginnings and fresh starts. We practice 108 Sun Salutations as this is a sacred and significant number in many ways, appearing in many disciplines from astronomy to yoga: The number 108 appears in ancient, sacred texts. For example, there are 108 Upanishads and 108 Tantras. There are 108 Temples to Vishnu. In numerology, 108 equals 9, which symbolizes universal love, eternity and awakening. In Ayurveda, there are 108 sacred points on the body. In astronomy, the distance between the Sun and Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun’s diameter. Mala bead necklaces have 108 beads, which are used to count during meditation.
